San Antonio’s Northside Independent School District is introducing a major change to its bus routes as it faces a $35 million budget deficit.
Starting next school year, families must pre-register children for bus service by June 30 to ensure a neighborhood stop is created.
Previously, stops were automatic for those living more than two miles from school, but new rules aim to improve efficiency and cut costs.
NISD Transportation Director Tesilia Soliz shared that, although over 35,000 students rode the bus last year, drivers often stopped with no one to pick up.
Some parents near Culebra Road and Loop 410 were surprised by the change, but plan to enroll so their children can continue riding next fall.
The district hasn’t estimated exact savings yet but says all measures will prioritize classroom impacts and financial health. Read More... |
Cibolo, Texas — The 34-year-old founder and superintendent of Essence Preparatory Public School, Akeem Jonathan Brown, was arrested by Cibolo police earlier this month and now faces three criminal charges.
Brown was booked into Guadalupe County Jail on May 14 for alleged driving while intoxicated, evading arrest, and unlawful carrying of a weapon.
He was released the same day, though further details on the cases remain unavailable.
The arrest adds to the school's challenges, as Essence Preparatory was ordered to close in December after poor performance ratings from the Texas Education Agency.
The school's open-enrollment contract will expire on July 31, following a series of failing grades, including two Fs and a D over the past three academic years.
The future remains uncertain for both Brown and the students affected by the school’s closure. Read More... |
San Antonio police officers were recorded pulling and shoving individuals off a tow truck amid raucous Spurs victory celebrations on Southwest Military Drive after Game 4.
The viral video quickly ignited community debate regarding the use of force by SAPD.
Samantha Mayorga, who filmed the incident, believed the tow truck was part of the festivities until learning it was actually on duty and working with police.
Mayorga described the crowd’s actions as hijacking the truck, though she didn’t personally witness attempts to damage the vehicle.
SAPD stated officers acted out of concern for public safety, claiming people had jumped atop the truck, risking harm, and possibly tried to break its rear window.
The incident is under investigation as planners urge fans to celebrate responsibly ahead of Game 6.
Mayorga, who owns a local shop, is offering discounted services to law enforcement in appreciation of their efforts. Read More... |
